June G. Smart, Ph.D., M.B.A., CLD, CLS

Associate Consultant

Dr. June Smart has over 40 years of extensive experience in clinical laboratory management, including 12 years of laboratory consulting experience in health systems, hospitals, and academic medical centers. Expertise includes laboratory management, outreach development, quality improvement, integration of hospital laboratories, regional laboratory networks, market opportunity assessments, cultural and leadership assessment at the departmental and organizational levels.

Prior to joining Colaborate, Dr. Smart held a variety of consulting, technical and managerial positions. In her role as Laboratory Administrative Director at St John Clinical Pathology Laboratories she was part of the foundation of one of the first hospital independent laboratory outreach programs and grew the business to over $14 million in sales. She managed the laboratory portion of an international cancer-screening program for a major automotive corporation, and served as a team member and advisor on the Cultural Assessment Committee for St John Health System. Dr. Smart led a team of laboratory managers through the first year of integrating nine hospital laboratories, as well as merging operations of an independent and hospital laboratory. For several years she served as Operations Chairperson for an expanding hospital laboratory network in South East Michigan, Joint Venture Hospital Laboratories (JVHL), leading to the most successful joint venture of hospitals in the nation, starting from four hospitals to now over 120 hospitals.

In addition to her clinical laboratory experience, she has been a cultural expert for Cultural Connections, Inc., working with a major automotive company for multicultural problem solving, global teaming and team effectiveness.

Dr. Smart received her medical technology training in Oxford, England at John Radcliffe Hospital and Oxford College of Science and Technology. Her MBA is from the University of Detroit, and her Ph.D. in Organizational and Business Anthropology from Wayne State University, Detroit. Dissertation focused on the formation of a Community-of-Practice during implementation of a Continuous Quality Improvement program across several hospitals. She is a registered clinical laboratory director, clinical laboratory scientist and has written numerous articles on laboratory operations for the Dark Report and is trained in cultural and leadership assessment.

Dr. Smart has been a speaker at national and international meetings and was a member of the CLMA education committee. She has worked with researchers on international health care projects in the Developing World and has traveled extensively in Europe, Central and South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia.

Professional memberships include: Clinical Laboratory Management Association, Society for the Anthropology of Work, Society for Applied Anthropology and Society for Medical Anthropology.
